I'm more of a latter-day MechWarrior. My friend had shown me some earlier versions of Mechwarrior but I would only play them when I went to visit. I think it must have been MW3... I just remember being attack by these little elementals that would shoot at you and then fly up into the sky like fleas.

I played StarCraft heavily online during the days when my daughter was born, which was back in 1995 and that went on for a while. I don't think I got into online MechWarrioring until late 2003... didn't Jack and Buns fire up their server for the first time in Feb 2004?

Anyway, the Zone was rife with servers and many mighty Mech pilots used me as a dust rag in those early days. One fearsome pilot was someone known as bl0t. He would devastate most of the players in the field, causing many to flee the server calling him a hack. I hung around as his personal punching bag because I was interested in learning how he could be so deadly. He must have been amused at my persistance and gave me a few tips and pointers and chassis configurations.

There were many clans around but none that I wanted to swear allegiance to. Most were very rigid in their playing times and requirements. Then I found this server with the funny name... White Pine Pizza Clan. Good games, fun people... I had finally found a home.

Well! We are back, finally! So I'll bite!

I Started playing mech in 95 I think, we had just got our new state of the art computer from Radio Shack! An Aptiva IBM with upgraded Windows 95! This set at Radio Shack came with several games with it! (and learning software too but who cares about that, ehh?) So nestled in the box was Creature fighters where cute cuddly puppys turned into mutant dogs in a street fighter style fighting game (lame) Shivers, an interesting puzzle game (which rawked) and Mech Warrior 2. I instantly loved that game. Playing it until 98 when Mech Warrior 2 Mercenaries came out.. I played that game for what seemed like ever. After that I started looking into other mech games. I found Mech Warrior on SNES and played it, was fun battle tech oriented game. Kinda neat, Then Mech Warrior 3050 on SNES. Played just like the desert strike games though, (which is obvious because Activision and Tiburon made both of those games) I then got into other mech games in a big way and started liking shooter games. I was then with out a computer for a while because my state of the art dinosaur IBM was obsolete and I could not afford a new pc. Then somewhere in 2000 I got a Dell (DUDE! I GOT ONE) and found Mech Warrior 4 in WALMART of all stores. I played the 1 player mode until I was board of it, then played online..... and fell in love... awwww.. I played for several groups then, didn't like any of them. Introduced my girlfriend (who later became mah wife) to Mech Warrior and let her play with a few friends. She hated it at first.. lol! Afterwards I upgraded from my dial up (because I couldn't sponge off my buddies dial up aol account anymore) and got the newest best thing! DirecWay! Satilite internet! And was suckered signed into a year contract and was told it was the best new thing for online games. I later found out that it was incompatible with online games... and was stuck with it for a year.... Later on, we got married, got an apartment and with in a few months, we started up hosting our own server in MW4. We liked hosting our own because we got to be different from the other servers. We named our server several funny different names. (Cake or Death comes to mind... Oh and Thunder Snow!) lol then we jokingly put WPPC in our faction name and inadvertently made a new clan.. The rest is history.

Thanks yall!

Interesting thread, so I thought I would chime in...I dont really know how long I have played Mechwarrior. I never did play Mech 2 or 3. All I remember is that I bought Vengeance and instantly fell in love with it. After running through the single player mode to get the hang of it, I said to my self "This is easy..." So I ventured into the online world. It was in this arena that I got a serious dose of humility crammed down my throat for a long period of time from the constant ass whipping generously given to me by what it seemed to be everyone that I came up against....

Initially I was mostly a Team mode player, really disliking the Attrition mode for the most part. I was dragged kicking and screaming into this world mostly by my brother as you all know as Zaug. During those days I ran as "Hellkat" and was eventually absorbed into {LOD}, or Lords of Destruction. It was in this clan that I started to learn the finer aspects of Team play and begin to become better and better over time, mostly running around as wingman behind 2 wicked, vicious pilots called "Mantra" and "Memnock" and learning what I could from them, but till sucking as an Attrition pilot. (most frustrating).

At some point I left LOD and was recruited by another clan called "Venomous", which was an elite Team mode Clan and ventured into Mercenaries, which really was a mistake, because I found that I really didnt care for the game at all. Too many long range weapons I guess, and it was flooded with Black Knights just waiting around for a pop up opportunity. Soon After this period, i retired Hellkat, and Ra was born.

So I found myself back In the Vengeance world. It was at this point that I hooked up with Tread and we formed Praetorian Guard and recruited an active member base. The Vengeance world continued to decline as more pilots migrated to Mercenaries. It was during this period that something just clicked for me as far as Attrition was concerned. I dont really know what it was that I started to do differently, I think it was just learning the feel for the weapon cycle and targeting more effectively. There is something to be said about learning and understanding "pace" and "task overload" and applying it to the mix. And by that I mean understanding intuitively what the next weapon to cycle will be and waiting to the last possible fraction of a second to pull the trigger based on the recovery of your opponent. (After he has been staggered from your fire) I also started to understand that the " zoom reticle", and the proper use of it is the most important Mech component. (At least in my opinion.) My game changed dramatically once I finally "got it", and made one simple change: moving the reticle button to another spot on my controller, and from there it came down to finding a configuration that worked for me the best.

It was also during this discovery that I started to work on a "shredder" configuration that was a combination of ballistics and beam weapons for Attrition. Attrition was dominated at this time by what Zaug and I called the "Brutus" configuration, which was 2 Clan Gauss, 6 ER Lazers and 1 LRM 20. At least this is what the Attrition elite were running at the time. Of course there were other configurations used, but this one dominated. I dont know if I was the first to bring out the Shredder configuration, all I know is that I was the one that began to use it consistantly. I just dont remember running up against anything similar at the time. I also believe that during this time I was the one person that brought the Vulture into popularity as a pure missle boat and the proliferation of it as a vicious support/stalker mech....I just never saw it in use that much, but I knew the potential of this small unassuming mech was powerful...Just had to learn how to use it properly...(I still over commit with it, and I consider this sinful)...

I remember clearly and understood that I had finally arrived during one game when my brother announced on the chat screen during a packed Attrition game, " Who are you, and what have you done with my brother..." Up until this point I was soundly thrashed by Mighty Zaug and other Attrition elites on an ongoing basis. The tide had finally changed. Zaug and I had been chasing the vaunted 3 kills per minute during a 15 minute game. One night I finally hit it, and Zaug was there to see it happen with me. This was soon before the clan that Tread and I formed finally folded. (Praetorian Guard)

If I remember correctly, it was soon after this period that I met and became friends with Buns and Jack and started to hang out with them on their server. I dont believe you guys knew me as "Hellkat", but I may be mistaken. Some of you may remember that name from the good ole days when Vengeance was alive and kicking...

I also remember the Attrition Tournaments that were going on in that era, much like what WPPC has done over the years, and it just doesnt get any better as far as online gaming is concerned. And then there were the "Clan Wars".....Nothin better than raiding an enemy server and going in there an whooping some asses and vice versa....Ahhh..The good ole days of Vengeance...

I remember well blOT, Spiff...He was certainly someone to stay away from, and I know what you mean when you talk about people calling him a hacker. I never had any reason to think that he was. He was just that good. I have had my fair share of the same accusation over the years, although I dont have a clue how someone even becomes a "hacker"....I would rather not play the game if this is what it takes to be competitive. To me, if you cant play this game with honor, then you shouldnt play it at all.....Hacking, or whatever it is that allows people to do this, is for children....

Well I guess I may have gotten a little bit off topic as far as just answering the question "How long have I been playing". I just think that the history of the game is extremely interesting and has been an intergal part of my life, silly as that may sound. After all it is only a game, but in my honest opinion, the best game that has ever been developed. I have not played any other game nearly as long, or have had such incredible highs and lows in any other game that I have experienced. It has been the only game that has actually made me get sweaty palms, actually shake with excitement, and jerk my back out of place from getting killed at some juncture when I least expect it. I have lost all aspect of time for literally hours at a time while in the cockpit, and have quit work early before, just to get back in the drivers seat. (Or not gone to work at all to get back into my alternative universe.) I have even gone so far as to go buy a complete new system from being totally pissed off at having issues that could not be resolved that was preventing me from palying Mechwarrior Vengeance. I have been accused of being obsessed with the game and the time that I have devoted to it in the past, and this is probably true, but I dont regeret even one minute that I have had the pleasure of playing this game and the thrill that it has given to me to be a part of it.

I truly miss the glory days of when this community was a thriving living universe of active and deadly pilots from all over the world, and the online friends that I have made and miss because of the decline in popularity.

I dont think there will ever be another game created that will have all the same elements of excitement, satisfaction, and sheer joy of being in the game and becoming a student of all the suttle aspects of being a pilot in the Mechwarrior Universe......

SALUTE....

I really don't know how to follow up such a Magnificent, Well- written, from the heart post such as Sir Ra's.

That post brought back, literally, a flood of memories of Mech Vengeance past that Iv'e not thought about in years.

I started out dating Jack back in 2001. This is when I was introduced to the game and found it to be something completely different from Mario,Metroid, or anything else I had ever played or seen at that point.

Jack Urged me to play it. I remember him showing me his Clan Server.. I believe he was a part of the Striker Clan. I'm sure he played under a different alias then. Ok , its coming back to me..i'm sure he played under the name "Protoman".

I played and H.A.T.E.D it..LOL! Yes, I didn't care much for the game or his friends. But I say the only thing that made me pick it up and play it again was the feeling of not being able to figure it out!

I played a bit here and there when I would be over Jacks house and it started to grow on me. Plus I liked all the personal training ^_^.

2004 rolled around and after flirting with the idea we started the Clan... and we ended up calling it "White Pine Pizza Clan" after a few other names didn't feel right. The only problem was Jack had played for years and I was like a duck out of water.. A mech with 2 left feet!

I was the punching bag for alot of elite and novice alike. Yes, I was thrown into Online play first. Cast into the lions den! I don't know if its something to be proud of or maybe could of been a better mechwarrior, but I have never played the Campaign Mode. Ever...to this day....lol..

I remember getting so mad and so upset that I couldn't be as good as my opponents. I sucked it up and tried being as tough as I could. Jack built all my configs and taught me the basics and would bully me on the field, for my own benefit of course wink and mid ways through 2004 my feet started staying on the floor longer and my butt not exploding so much. I actually managed some points and could shoot someone before they shot me.

Then, I can remember around the fall of 2004, we had about 6 guys on our server. We were playing Gatorbait and I guess I must of thrown a fit or everyone felt sorry for me, everyone just kind of stopped playing. We all stood in a circle and everyone but a few were laughing at me but it was all in good fun. There standing there with Spiff, Ra(I cant remember who else was there just some other guys that dont play anymore) was a fella by the name of Zaug.

I just remember him stepping forward and saying he thought I had alot of "potential" and he said he would help teach me how to play this game and have fun while doing it!

Of course I had fun playing it anyway, but we all know that being able to do some damage and not get picked on seemed to be a LOT more fun to me smiley .

Zaug then started up showing up on our server more regularly and with his help and the help of my fellow clansmen I was kickin' butt and takin' names! hehe ^_~

The glory days of Vengeance was sweeter then wine. Those are days I am very honored to say I was a part of and that was a very special time in my life with my new life starting and with my love for Jack bloomed my love for Mechwarrior Vengeance.

God Bless you all and Thank you for being part of this most amazing journey through life and gaming. These have been the best years of my life and I can honestly say you all are my family. We are part of THE best game ever made for Online play or for that matter anything on PC.

This game is something that cannot be replaced by any other game or extra curricular anyone may throw your way. My butt belongs here in the pilots seat with you all by my side!

I think (memory is a bit hazy) that I started
Mech Warrior after seeing how much fun
my son was having playing it. Daishis were
called Dire Wolves I think. Discovered online play
with Mech Warrior Vengence. At first and for a
long period of time was a regular doormat for other
players. Then I joined a clan called SKAG and
learned the ways of the mech warrior force.
Many happy evenings were devoted to "the games."
Then Mercs came out and most folks migrated
away. Eventually the online version of Veng was
eliminated and sadly I thought I'd never play again.
Then one evening I get this message from Yard saying the server was up at WPPC and come join in.
Ah heaven.
