question Laptop Hard Drive Use With PC?
« Thread started on: Nov 16th, 2011, 2:19pm »

Help! I don't know who else to ask... lol. I have a laptop (yes, the original one Buns used 7 years ago) and it has finally bit the dust. Unfortunately, I haven't backed up anything on it in a while. What died on the laptop is the power part. Either the power cord OR the power supply? (where you plug the power cord in) has went bad but the thing is... I don't really know if that IS the reason... I know I use to be able to jiggle the wires and it would start charging again but now it doesn't charge at all. The HD works just fine on it and I was wondering....

How can I access the HD from a PC? I know its possible. If someone could just point me in the direction of a bit of hardware I might need to do this that would be great.

I used to by external Hard drive units a long time ago, but then I just started buying internal hard drives to back up data, plugging them into an external hard drive bay. There's all sorts out there... some, like mine, hold a single drive. Others hold two drives and allow you to copy from one drive to the other. You would need just a single bay so that you can get the data off your laptop drive. Make sure the bay handles both 3.5 and 2.5 inch drives.

The one I got a couple of years ago was a Nexstar (made by VanTec). It may look different these days. But here is a pic that looks like mine. They also refer to these bays as toasters... lol!

I dunno if you're still looking for answers, but you should be able to hook up the laptop to your PC. I just don't think you can actually mount it.

Doh, needed to lock this topic. I got it sorted out. I spent 10 bucks on a new ac power cord.... Half way bingo... Problem was the power cord I was using was going bad and the cord had to be twisted and bent just so..... (sort of like tin foil on an antenna.. lol) and it would hold... the other half of the problem was where the power cord plugged in! It has to be REALLY wedged in there and tilted to the right in order to charge.... so I would have NEVER gotten anywhere with what I had. Luckily the power cord I bought is enough to get by for the foreseeable future. The laptop IS dying but at least I got all the data backed up now.
