xx HALP! MAH ROUTER HAS THE DUMB! *Hosting Problems*
« Thread started on: Oct 21st, 2007, 1:50pm »

Well, its been a few days now and I still can't figure it out. The other day we were expecting BAD storms so I unplugged the pc, monitor, MODEM and ROUTER. A day later when I hooked it all back up, my modem had given me a NEW IP address and my router became confused. Before it assigned the PC to address 192.168.1.100 and the laptop as address 192.168.1.101. I had all my ports open in the router for these addresses. However... After my router was confused it switched the ips. so the lap top and the pc had reversed in the addresses. The result? No one can connect to the server AT ALL except me and Buns. This setting shouldn't have changed much because BOTH address were in the router anyway. So I tried and tried to get the server fixed and I really don't know what to look for TO fix it. I even cleared out the router and started over from scratch. Again, the router reads the laptop as 192.168.1.100 and the pc as address 192.168.1.101. From what I can tell, this is the only thing that changed, my nic address.

So I tried to fix this on my own and I'm too dumb to do it, so now I'm asking for help. Does anyone know what the problem is?!

I cannot help with the router but I might suggest not unplugging the router and modem and putting them on a separate battery backup from the computer. Both should have redundant surge protection. I use APC backup with 74 minute battery runtime. I have been online during thunderstorms with nary a computer hiccup even when the power went off for a moment. Also, have some kind of surge suppression in the cable line.
Every time you unplug some modems, the address changes. Mine does. You might request from Charter, (ewe) that you be issued a static address instead of a dynamic address.
BTW, you not dumb, just iggorant about modems and routers, just like me. lipsrsealed cry

Jack, there are 2 ways to assign static LAN ip's:
1) in the router menu
2) at PC network settings

If you plan to unplug the router from time to time, better choose method 2 and assigned the PC to address 192.168.1.100 and the laptop as address 192.168.1.101 at their local network settings.
Network settings => your LAN or WLAN connection / right click = properties => TCP/IP / right click = properties =>
Fill in the entries:
fix IP: 192.168.1.100
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
standard gateway: [your router's IP]
DNS server: [your router's IP]

Then these settings will last, you can leave your router with the default DHCP server settings, don't need to assign static IP at router.

Hope this helps

Done! Thank you my friends!
<S>
Now I changed it just like Frost said and now my ip is what it was before and the lap tops is now back to what it was before......however..in the router it shows BLANK as my ip. Before it detected it and showed the right one, it does for the lap top, just not mine. I'm going to reboot the pc and the lap top (internet works on both btw) My ip by our isp ALSO changed back to normal after I unplugged it once more because it wasn't talking to the router and the router told me I should do that (spooky I know, router then told me I would eat chicken for dinner....go figure..) So after doing what the router told me, our old ip is back (or at least one very similar to it) and I changed our DNS wppc.servegame.org to point to this new ip.

If all went well then it should work! Thanks again guys and wish us luck!

cool

cheesy Glad to hear it works and kitchen is open again !!! cheesy

Jack, maybe I should add another important thing:
Many routers offer the option to save the router settings to a file. At least D-Link and Netgear routers have this feature, as far I've seen. It's highly recommended to use this backup feature. Next time your router settings are confused, you'll be able to restore the settings by loading this backup file. It's a really nice feature, I use it too... and already needed it sometimes... wink
