Can't connect..
« Thread started on: Sep 24th, 2007, 03:46am » |

Ok I'm srsly confused..
I find out today that the ports were messed up and reset in our router, so I changed them back. We both could connect in the venge server, it worked fine. Within the first 3 tries for me and about 6 tries for the lap top, now in mercs. Weird. I donno if its the times of day or what but first mercs was working, we could both connect to the server we host with in a few tries. I then tried going to savages server. I connected on the 2nd time. The lap top...never got in, must have tried 19 times would NOT go through. But we both could get on the server we host.. Strange. We tried over and over in our server. We went through about 70% of the time. Now I checked in my router and the pc is assigned address 192.168.0.102 and the ports are all open for mech on that ip. Now for the lap top, its assigned addy 192.168.0.101 Now I was going to open the same ports for that addy and ran into a problem, I got "error. port conflict with address 192.168.0.102" So I tried making all the rules a few numbers below on the first one and a few above on the second (port entry and exit, I assume) again ran into a problem, I could only assign 10 rules in the router at a time. So I ended up making a rule from 1000- 47777 on addy 192.168.0.101. Now WAFFLES?! HOW CAN I FIX THIS?!
Does anyone know? is this even the problem? What ports does mercs use thats different from venge? This is driving me up a wall....

I dunno much about ports and such... I can barely keep my wireless router and and my DSL modem happy... lol.
But perhaps you are pushing the envelope with hosting both Venge and Mercs at the same time and then trying to join up your PC and laptop to play on top of that?
I know that the infuriating part of it is that it seems that you have been able to pull this off successfully in the past.
But you know... this is Microsoft yer dealing with. Some little security update could have snuck in there and changed the rules on ya. You know... tweaked something to "protect you for your own good." My experience has been that whenever you find a cool way to do something... some other fool will have found a way to use that same technique for evil, forcing MS to take away the cool capability "for the greater good."
Yesh, this is probably just paranoid ranting, but when all other logic and reason fail, blaming MS will help you sleep better at night.

Jack, here is my router setup, maybe it helps:
1) I can host for both Venge and Mercs, the ports are the same. No different settings needed...
2) You cannot forward same ports to several machines at same time. This results in messages like "error. port conflict with address 192.168.0.102". This problem can be easily fixed by DXPort running on both PCs in your LAN. DXPort splits the DirectPlay 2300-2400 port range into separate ranges for each PC.
3) Only the server machine needs the 4 port range entries mentioned below, a client only needs 1 entry (2300-2400 port range) .
Plz try the following router settings (all entries for TCP/UDP): Note: DXPort must be running on both machines with exactly the same port ranges as defined at the router.
PC1 (= MW4 server): 2302-2311 => DXPort on PC1 = 2302-2311 47624 27999 28800-28809
PC2 (= Laptop) 2312-2321 => DXPort on PC2 = 2312-2321

Grr,, I must be doing it wrong. I think Spiff is on to something with that M$ changing things for "my own protection" thing. BAH!
I wish I could go back to using the old usb cord on the lap top and me take the cat 5. Maybe I need to get one of those modem/router combos and that would fix it. BAH
About these..
Quote:PC1 (= MW4 server): 2302-2311 => DXPort on PC1 = 2302-2311 47624 27999 28800-28809 |
|
I'm guessing thats only for the router,
Quote:
these parts? Right? I got those open on the router, I can't put those in dxport, right? (still kinda a n00b at routers and ports, even though I host.)
ok, I think I got it, still confused on why it worked before and now its all wonky. Everytime we get a new modem something like this happens. Charter guy last time had "protocall" and had to change our NEW modem AGAIN. (for a charge of 33$ + the housecall) while his partner "fiddled with wires" (just for good measure so we really wont be able to pinpoint the problem again) So when he changed our modem again we had the problems. The modem we used for years allowed us to use usb on the lap top and cat5 on the pc. There was no need for a router....now with the new modems, usb is disabled. (we called to check, charter got mad we were trying to do that and told us its not possible, we told them we did it for years and wanted to know how to do it again, they got mad and told us to only use cat5 and then disabled the usb. Usb stopped working totally after that....)
So yea, I think this will work as soon as I grow a brain and figure out what needs to be done. I thank you very much Frost for helping me with this!
Thanks yall!

heres a quick screenshot I did. Is that close>? can I just put in a range starting and ending that has all those ports or do I need to have them all in individually?

This does not relate to router problems but to game performance. Quake 4 will not run on my computer, even with a 512mb BFG Video Card. A very computer tech savvy friend of mine told me that overall game performance, minimal lag for instance, is directly related to the RAM installed in your computer. I have three varied sticks of RAM, 512 and two 256mg all different brands. According to him, I should have 2 gigs of MATCHED RAM. Ideally, it should be high performance. I am looking at a matched pair of 1gig Kingston sticks that are compatible with my mainboard. They are at NewEgg for $109. They are not high performance rated but should be enough for my purposes. Average Kingston is equal to some other makes premium RAM. They have to be matched to the computer brand and model or mainboard model

Hmm, my MW4 server PC has only 512 mb Infineon RAM. Furthermore, it's a really old PIII machine, only 1GHz btw. So PC performance and RAM doesn't really matter for this quite old game from my experience...
Jack, it was a good idea to post a screen shot of your router config! So I can tell ya it cannot work this way:
1) Yes, ya should "just put in a range starting and ending that has all those ports". Thats the way it works indeed.
2) the server machine (192.168.0.102) gets the ports: 2302-2311 47624 27999 28800-28809
the other client PC (laptop 192.168.0.101) gets the ports: 2312-2321
DXPort must be installed at both PC's. Here's the DXPort config for both PCs: The server gets: Start Port: 2302 End Port: 2311
The laptop gets: Start Port: 2312 End Port: 2321
My router config looks like this (It's a D-Link DL-604, same way to configurate as yours) :

Remarks: 192.168.0.5 = server PC 192.168.0.9 = my PC 192.168.0.4 = kid's PC1 192.168.0.8 = kid's PC2 192.168.0.11 = test PC
(Note: There's a typo for the router entry "DirectX7": ya only need port 47624, 47625 is not neccessary - I was too lazy to edit it cause it makes no difference concerning function.)
On each PC DXport is running with with the same Start Ports/End Ports as mentioned in router.
Other important router settings: - UPnP Setting = DISABLED !! - Ping allowed

Frost is correct that our game does not need much ram but some of the newer games do. My machine also is several years old. Athlon Thoroughbred 2ghz processor but can be improved with an upgrade in RAM for Quake 4, Unreal Tournament 2007 and other good blood and guts shooters. Will still have to run at lower graphics settings. Have Highest setting in MW4.
A question; when I finally get my server up and running, should I be able to serve and play (two computers) with the same modem/router (combined)? Modem has four ethernet connections plus wi-fi , usb and firewire.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooo
I can't do that! It wont let me put in ranges with public and private ports! I can ONLY do one at a time.. BAH!
Still though YOU RAWK! THANK YOU!! This is great! Even though my router sucks, I still think I can use a BUNCH of this info to help us out. I never thought to put in DX port as a rule in the router..

Hmm, very strange, ya cannot enter something like "28800-28809" Unbelievalble - then this router really sucks!
!!! BUT - there should be a workaround. Hm, ya wrote you "could only assign 10 rules in the router at a time". Maybe this one helps:
1) Replace rule mw7 by: 198.168.0.102 - 2302-2311
2) Add a rule "mw12": 198.168.0.101 - 2312-2321
After this all 10 available rules are assigned (hope ya'll need no further rules for other software...). Make sure DXPort is running on both computers with these port ranges specified (as described in my previous post)!!
I know this doesn't cover the whole range 28800-28809, but the most important ports for servers in this port range are the ports: 28800 (UDP) and 28805, 28806, 28807, 28808 (TCP). (For simplification I made all rule entries "both" TCP/UDP)
So this should work... Good luck!

Yes LP, you're right that newer games need better hardware than my PIII router machine But - as it's the only game I play it doesn't really matter..
And your question: Yes - ya should be able to serve and play (two computers) with the same modem/router. The best way is to install DXPort on both computers and allocate the 2 different port ranges to your machines. Then make the corresponding rules for your router - as described in my last post. This splits the 2300-2400 DirectPlay port range into 2 smaller ranges, one for each computer. Then ya can serve with one PC and play with the other PC at the same time - not only on your own server but even on other external servers.
Without DXPort you would need to assign the whole port range 2300-2400 to your server PC. Then ya could only connect to your own server via LAN connection from your other PC. You would NOT be able to connect to other external servers by this method from your second PC at the same time. So I definitely recommend the DXPort solution...
Hope this helps ~S~ Frost

I have a simple solution 1. Carefully unplug the ethernet cables from the router. 2. unplug the router from the surge protector. 3. Package up the router. 4. Ship it to me so that I can run it over repeatedly with my pick up As my wife take video for posting. 5. Purchase net gear router and game forever!

Well after catching the other router on fire.. We got a new one today. This one is made for gaming. When I went to look at the section where I can adjust ports and such, I saw this..

Looks like I'm going to have all I need with this one. Seems pretty simple. Wish me luck.
