This is Jack, btw.. So the server is out of commision for awhile. I scanned and defragged today... had the server up. All seemed well.. then Yard and Skel said it was a little laggy. No big deal, I'll just reboot again.. Wrong.. The pc did not start back up. Just gets hung on the dos screen. I'm thinking Hard Drive failure. I'll have to buy a new hd and an os to go with it.

Give me a few weeks (I hope not that long) and I should have it back up. Meanwhile, I've lost everything I had on the pc including all my server settings. So all that work I did last year was for nothin, BAH! Between this and my stomach ulcer.. I think I can safely say 2010 sucks

So please use Dillon's server or Frost's for the next lil while.

<S> And sorry for the trouble.

Jack,

Don't give up the ship yet...I had a similar hand during boot up..turned out to be a bad NIC card....another time..it was the modem....

Try removing any un-needed cards and devices first!...dont forget "Safemode"

As for a new OS...why...you still have the license for that machine..and if it was a Dell...you should be able to restore the OS from the CD that they always send out with the machine....

rly?! Ok, info. How can I transfer the license from the old hd? I never got a code with it. Just a re install disk. (Came loaded)

2, I take out the HD and the comp begins to start up. I can get into that menu that says "boot from where" plugging the hd in, it just gets stuck. I pulled out the HD from the OOOOLLLLDD computer (Server 1.0) from years ago, hoping it would fit in the new'er dell... It didn't

If I do have to get a new HD. What are the differences in them? Both looked the same but one had diff hookups on the back. Waffles?

Yah... my old Dell 4550 uses drives with the old Parallel ATA (PATA) interface. My newer Dell uses the Serial ATA (SATA) drives.

Most drives you see out there now are SATA. You can read about the differences here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

So yeah, your older PATA drive won't work in your newer PC. You can buy external HD housings for both SATA and PATA HDs. I have one of each. These allow you to take an internal HD and use them as an external HD... they have their own power cord and connect to your PC with via USB. My PATA housing is a semi-permanent setup... I can change the drive in it, but I need to take it apart, take out screws, etc. The external SATA housing works like the old 8-track players... I pop in a drive and use it for a awhile or until it gets full. I can then "eject" it and pop in another internal HD. It's very handy for backing up systems.

Getting back to PATA drives, the one I have is made by RocketFish. I think I got it at Fry's a while ago. You can probably also find them on EBay.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I haven't had any problem with these do-it-yourself external drives.

You should be able to reinstall using the recovery/ reinstall disc you have, It will not ask for a code if it is from Dell AND being reinstalled on a Dell machine...nifty huh?

As for your hard drive, Agree with Spiff...everything nowdays is is SATA or Raid (you will need a separate controller for that)...however...here is a Bi-ATA drive..(snicker)

Here's one from Tiger:
