I downloaded it and played a few rounds last night. Certain improvements are obvious, like anyone using the old "print Screen" exploit now are exposed in the chat box with the message "Player X saved a screen image"...along that same line, long name hacks are gone too!

Also, noticeable improvement in lag performance. You do not have to lead a shot nearly as much any more.

The server menu is a bit different now, grouping the country of origin with a house name..kinda neat. So at a glace, you know which region of the world the server is located.

But the biggest improvement by far is the installation. simple download via the new MTX download application. (One note however...If your CD in not in Drive D..you will either need to rename the drive "D" or change the cd-key file..not hard...but just a warning.

Give it a whirl!

-Yard!

P.S>here's the install:

To install MW4:Mercs 3.1:
1) Download MTX
2) Start MTX and click the Install button in the lower right-hand corner to download and install MW4:Mercs 3.1. MTX can
download via torrent (by default) as well as http. Make sure port 57030 is open for good speed.
3) You must open the following ports for MW4:Mercs 3.1 multiplayer:
For TCP both inbound and outbound: 47624
For TCP and UDP both inbound and outbound: 2300-2400

IMPORTANT: For MW4:Mercs 3.1, if your CD drive is NOT your D: drive, you will need to edit the "mercs-cd-key" file
in the primary Mercs folder. Set the drive letter to match where your CD drive is. Then, double click the file to
add it to the registry. Otherwise, it will continually ask you for Disk 2 to start the game.

I have downloaded and installed MTX + MP3.1 and have my FrostFight server up and running in MP3.1 on evenings CET. Everything's running fine so far. Furthermore, Zombie has a 24/7 SoE test server running in MP3.1 too. More and more ppl are switching from MP3.02b to MP3.1, guess it's going to be mainstream soon.

MekTek's MP3.1 seems to bring important bug fixes and makes the game more compatible with current pc systems. To include the Clan/IS paks was a nice thing too. Btw, now the paks even work with 64bit OS, as CDilla copy protection is no longer required for them. That's good news.

For installation, just follow Yard's instructions, should work for most ppl. Bottom line is, I like it and actually haven't played MP3.02b since I installed MP3.1.

Well, of course that doesn't affect our "Friday evening Venge" event. Y'all know that's something very special and hopefully will last forever... wink

Cu on Mercs MP3.1 + MW4 Venge!

So, I can install mercs (pr0) and go from there directly to the new patch? That work? I'll be giving this a try once I get everything else sorted out. Sounds good! I'm excited.

It's not a patch. No other mechwarrior installation required for MP3.1, it's standalone.
First install MTX, then download and install Mercs MP3.1 via MTX, It's one big file named "mechwarrior4mercenaries.all.to.51.03.01.0017.mtx" with everything included for MP3.1. You don't need to touch your other mech installations for doing that.

Important: Install MP3.1 to a different folder, maybe s. th. like
c:\program files\Mektek\Mechwarrior Mercenaries - Mektek Mekpak
As a result, you will keep all your other mech versions and additionally get the new MP3.1.

I got a problem with this.. I've experienced first hand one problem and heard of another.. I think it should be addressed..

1) I've known for a long time that a ms program called ".netframework" can cause a lot of lag in a mw4 server. When I got windows 7 I found out it can be disabled and turned off for good. (Only problem is some programs don't work like IE8 and a firewall I had) oh well... I don't use them anyway. So I turned it off and found the server to be running smoothly. I was installing MTX today and found..... it wants to install netframework..
lipsrsealed Waffles?
2) I brought this up to a buddy and they told me of a worm called CDILLA also comes bundled with this free version of mercs. srsly.. WHAT? I know CDILLA (I think I know) is in the mekpaks and antivirus software removed them from many peoples computers - rendering their mekpaks useless (they break) The mek pak utilities (repair) programs patch the game and plug the hole left by CDILLA making the paks work again (with out the worm). They work great! Problem is - this copy of mercs has CDILLA built right in... and it cannot be removed. Anyone know anything else about this?

I don't think CDILLA is an issue...if you are not planning to copy the discs...it is by what I can tell..NOT SPYWARE or a WORM.....that being said, a lot of folks do not want it on their machines.

I found two articles which may help if you want to disable it...I don't think it will bebnefit you with reguards to server performance at all...just if you are trying to make a back-up of MW.

Having done a great deal of research over a large proportion of websites and forums. All evidence seems to point towards the fact that short of throwing away your existing Hard-drive(s), nothing will remove it. However if you don't mind knowing the files are there (but definitely inactive) then I have a workaround that has enabled me to carry on as I always have, with the ability to make/create mix CD's and backups as always.

Firstly remove the C-Dilla directory that it self creates, and anything within it. However do not delete the DLL files that it leaves in the system folder, as it will simply re-create them on reboot.

Open your control panel > administrative tools > services.

C-Dilla will appear on the list as C-DillaCdaC11BA.

Right-click > properties

Under the 'General' tab, ensure that 'Startup type' is set to 'Disabled' and under the 'Log On' tab, that all hardware profiles have it disabled also.

And reboot. C-Dilla should no longer be a running process, and will not affect your backup creation.

Hope this helps those that are also cursed by this atrocity

And here is a pretty good post about it ...

I did a google search for c-dilla macrovision and came up with this, hope it helps:
http://www.auditmypc.com/freescan/readingroom/cdilla.asp
Cdilla - C-Dilla, What is it?
C-Dilla, Cdilla and cdac11ba.exe

* Process File: (cdilla) cdac11ba or cdac11ba.exe
* Process Name: cdac11ba
* Description: Associated with MacroVision’s SafeCast copy protection software which enables other software manufacturers to protect their products from illegal copying.
* Company: MacroVision
* System Process: No
* Security Risk ( Virus/Adware/Spyware ): No, but double check using this spyware test
* Common Errors: N/A

CDilla - Detailed information

C-Dilla [ cdac11ba.exe ] was the name of a company that was acquired by Macrovision in 1999. Some Macrovision SafeCast technology is derived from earlier C-Dilla products, and some of the files and folders used by SafeCast-licensed applications today still have "C-Dilla" in their names.

For example, TurboTax has been known to install and use C-Dilla. What disturbs users is that Macrovision / C-Dilla License Management System can be installed without clear notification and remains after you uninstall the main application. To uninstall this software, you have to go through the uninstall procedures like you would for any software, and select this product.
cdac11ba.exe - spy ware?

Is it spyware? Spyware, also called adware, is commonly defined as any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. Spyware applications are typically bundled as a hidden component of freeware or shareware programs that can be downloaded from the Internet. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Because the Cdilla does not gather Internet connection information, the program is not considered spyware.

@Jack:

1) Yes, MTX needs .net framework 3.5 for installation. But - ppl on our MP3.1 servers didn't notice more lag than usual. I don't think that this .net framework thing will cause any additional lag. This .net software is an integral Windows component that supports building and running applications and XML Web services. I guess it will become more and more important, so you simply won't be able to ignore it in the long run. So no problem with this as far as I can see.

2) As Yard stated, CDilla isn't Spyware or malware. It's an old copy protection application and won't do any harm. Just ignore it...
Btw, CDilla seems to be inactive in MP3.1, so the included MS Mekpaks even work with 64bit Windows versions.

that is not a fair reference...

I will compare it to PR1 and MP3.02

FAR SUPERIOR!

"8"

It really fixed easy exploits that jerks were using...and the lag is corrected...plus big thumbs up for the MTX installer.

I really can't wait for MP4 actually...which I am hopeful will add a new dimension to the game play...although..if those folks couldn't handle HLA..I doubt they will like MP4 as it brings the game back to a more realistic play like MW3...(pokes Ra and Jack)

Yes!

Mektek is down.....and that is prolly great news!

coolcoolcool

The chatter on the boards...mainly from Jeho and White feather were they were very very close to releasing the free MW4 series...hoping to do it by this weekend!

My guess is they are tweaking and preparing for the onslaught of downloads and traffic getting ready to hit them!

Mah instincts were correct....

HERE IT COMES!

From VAM at Mektek

Quote:
If you've been following the drama surrounding the free release of Mechwarrior4, than you would be aware that the initial announcement, made last summer, was a bit premature. After nearly a year since the announcement came, MekTek Studios is pleased to announce, that Microsoft Legal has given the all clear for the free release of Mechwarrior4. This hallmark movement by Microsoft Games couldn't come at a better time, as the Mechwarrior community is attempting a rebirth, amidst announcement of a Mechwarrior Reboot. Thank you Microsoft.

A few weeks ago we stuck our neck out and announced that our studio was struggling to see this release through to the end. We also released our MekPak 3.1, through our distribution and patching system MTX, which gave our developers an opportunity evaluate any unknown bugs. We're glad our announcement and release worked, and we have many to thank for raising awareness, as the release of Mechwarrior4 is now imminent.

Some of the people we'd like to thank, to name a few, are those reporting gaming news such as Joystiq, Bluesnews, BigDownload, Fragland, Gamespy, IGN, Shacknews, and Slashdot. We'd also like to thank all major gaming forums for keeping this topic in discussion and not letting people forget about the promise of a Mechwarrior free release. Of course, we'd like to thank our partners for pressing Microsoft to allow for the release of Mechwarrior to the community including Smith and Tinker, INC., Virtual World Entertainment, LLC., and Catalyst Game Labs. And finally we'd like to thank our community and the Mechwarrior fans for standing behind MekTek when things appeared to be at their worst. Thank you for your continued support. Please stay tuned for the release launch!
