xx Dumbest problem ever with Mercs mp3b and Vista...
« Thread started on: Jan 4th, 2009, 9:03pm »

First of all.. please, help. This has driven me crazy all freaking day. Heres whats going on.

I have a Dell Inspiron 531s with windows Vista Home Basic Service Pack 1

AMD Sempron Processor LE-1250 2.20 GHz

4.00GB of RAM

32-bit Operating System is the system type.

I was trying to install Mercs MP3b and heres what happened.....

I installed from the CD. I then opened my Mercs folder and looked for the clan pak and inner sphere pak. I deleted them from the mercs fold then installed the PR1 patch right after. Then I installed MP3a and then the patch to MP3b and the mektek zone patch.....

If your wondering I installed them exactly in this order.

After this, I tried to run the game. And thats when the problems started.. The game done this:

User Image

My copy of mercs is legit and fine.. I've used it on many different computers over the years and have NEVER ran into this error before.

I managed to get it off of that screen and tried it again. I received "COM Surrogate Error" Many times... over and over...

So after I attempted to get that screenshot.. VERY odd things happened.. MS Paint froze and quit... got errors in PAINT for crying out loud! So I tried Photoshop.. Again, error! all the while COM Surrogate is popping up at the bottom of the screen.

After a reboot, I tried it again. This time I decided to use the MS zone just to see if it loaded. Oddly enough it did... I got to the screen where you can pick servers and it was blank.. I decided to try the mektek zone again. (No errors so far) The game loaded and I got to the multiplayer screen again.. Everything was GREEN. Apparently the MP3b patch did NOT work after I clicked it. I re installed the MP3b patch. Tried the game again.. Got the COM Surrogate error again and this time... something new.. after the splash screen the game just turned OFF.. no error, no nothing.. It just quit. Remembering the COM Surrogate error, I thought maybe this was the problem.

I checked google about this and found THIS

Here I found out that the security of VISTA was stopping MW from working.

I learned how to disable COM Surrogate and continue with my attempts.

No error this time but.. now MW just turns off after the splash screen. Again and again and again. (and yes I'm hitting right click and use as admin).

Ok so after a few friends telling me I should just start over.. I did.

I uninstalled and started over. This time on EACH icon for the patches and hit "run as admin". Got NO PROBLEMS. I also tested the game each time after a patch finished.

PR0= Works! Was fine! Game loaded and could do anything!

PR1= Works! Was fine! Game loaded and could do anything!

MP3a= Works! Was fine! Game loaded and could do anything!

MP3b= FAIL! Game just turns off after the splash screen and doesn't ever come back. No matter what I click, no matter what I set the compatibility to, no matter if its admin or Bun Li's account or anything. It just turns off in MP3b.

Now I found THIS and it says that this happens because of the clan and inner sphere paks but I do not have them in the computer anymore. And I'm still getting the problem...

Waffles! What is going on here? Anyone know anything?

HEH!

Well, jack, im going to be serious now.

IF everyhting works up to MP3b, then my logical reasoning follows that the download of said patch file aws corrupted somehow. Re-download the patch and start over again

Id be more than willing to bet that installing MP3b edits the register version, and that a corrupt download of said patch file edits it incorrectly, thus causing the error.

Here is an alternate soloution, if that ones doesnt suit you.

Thanks for the help.

Quote:
Run it as an admin for both patches, or all. Running the patch normally will prevent files from being installed, canceling the whole process. Running as an admin will work completely. Even as an admin, right click the patch and select "Run as administrator." Should be right below the bolded Open at the top, and it may have a shield icon next to it.

Did all that on my second attempt to re install. Same outcome. Game turned off after splash page.

Could not re install mp3b patch because it gave me errors of "Props,Textures,Core" files are the same. (Was already installed)

Going to check the shell file. Had a problem simular to that before which required the shell file.. however it was when clicking a server in multiplayer..

*tests*

[afterthoughts on reads] Quote:
I have tried everything mentioned above and still cannot get Mercs MP3.02b. I even started with a fresh install. I can get Mercs to run all the way up till MP3.01a however after I run MP3.02b the game simply crashes without showing the splash screen. There is no amount of shortcut switches I can add to the executable that will resolve this. I did, however, try to run MW4Mercs_win32.exe. This showed me the splash screen and then the autoconfig screen. After I OKed past the Autoconfig screen I instantly got a "Program not responding" error from Vista SP1.

I did change the folder permissions to Admin, I changed ownership of the folder and subfolders and files to Admin, and I even set the C-Dilla Service to log in with an Admin account. Does anyone have any further ideas?

This sounds like my problem at mektek..

Also this looks like a good idea:
Quote:
Im running Vista Home Premium 32-bit, have been since the first day it was released and haven't had a problem at all with Mercs, installing etc.

It's VERY simple.

Go to the Windows Logo / Start Menu

Click on Control Panel

Click on Classic View on the Left Panel

Click on Users

Click on the Administrator Account (Which should be the default one you are already using unless you have other Users)

Click on Turn User Account Control On or Off

Uncheck "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer

Click Ok (YOU WANT UAC OFF)

Reboot and install everything you need.

Play the game.

OR

After once finished, go back and check mark the UAC back on after you are done installing everything and your game will be playable WITH or WITHOUT UAC on.
I leave that crap off because Im a big boy and have a pretty good handle on what I should or shouldn't allow to run.

Hope that helps.

Seems like a good idea... also this may help me..

<S> Wishing my self luck..

btw, anyone got a link handy to the shell file?

*edit*
found one

Ahh depends on if your 32 or 64 bit. 32 bit will run the mek paks. 64 though, no way...

Share some more info with us! Lets try to fix it! Man I know how frustrating it is working on this crap.

It is a 32 bit Vista Ultimate. Will start with Veng and work up. Probably mess with it this weekend.

BTW, I have added some galleries to my website and a link to a site where I am selling fine art photos. Link is at bottom of this page.

I am going to be playing with this (see below). It may solve some of the compatibility problems. Windows Virtual Machine.

Hmmm... good idea!

I have not tried it myself, but they use this technique for testing software by setting up separate virtual environments on a single system.

If I get some time, I'll experiment with setting up an XP virtual environment running under Vista.
