I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Theres a LOT of players in free mercs. To check which servers have people in them before you even start the game you can check this:
http://www.mektek.net/mekmatch/

Usually most people play HLA here. Continuous beam lasers and rapid fire rockets (usually only 10 ammo or something) sort of ruins the NHUA experience. Most weapons were meant for HLA so in NHUA you can abuse the heck out weapons. Many servers run new features such as extended visibility. Where as before your max range was 900m for your target reticule to pick up an enemy - now the range is 1200. Also many servers will run Forced First Person because of another new feature... Advanced Radar. Best called line of sight radar. If an enemy is sitting in the middle of the battle field he shows up on radar like normal.. but if the enemy gets behind a mountain or building... he disappears off of radar until you can see him. Using the 3rd person view gives the player an unfair advantage of being able to see over walls where the opponent won't see them on radar... Just warning you of what has changed out there.. thats pretty much it I think! If your still into NHUA the group ICM runs about 5 servers for it out there. As for other servers - there is of course The Dining Room where we do just about everything. And Sunder Junkies are fantastic mission servers! A good crowd usually gathers at CYT and Way of the Bawk too, I think. Check out those places..... oh speaking of.... I suppose I did leave something out.... sort of a small thing really.. just a tiny thing called Pure Tech... lol

Pure Tech! I have to say this is my favorite thing about new mercs! Something always sort of bugged me about the whole CLAN mechs and all those CLAN weapons thing... and those INNER SPHERE mechs and their technology... why even put it in the game.... "just a nod from their origins in the battle tech lore and novels?" Really? I mean just from the weapon stand point from Venge and BK - old Mercs - Clan weapons were usually BETTER! Why even use the shorter ranged / longer recharge time of the inner sphere weapons? Well now...... there is a reason.... Pure Tech means you drive a CLAN mech you can ONLY load it up with CLAN WEAPONS. Same with INNER SPHERE! INNER SPHERE MECHS are awesome! Really! IFF has been improved! IFF now makes your mech not show up at all on radar.... not even under target reticule...... Inner Sphere mechs can turn into ghosts for the most part... this opens up a whole new way to play this game imo. There is something like 130 + mechs... so if you break that into half for each side. Inner Sphere and Clan! It might sound complicated but it is really VERY easy to get use too. I found playing the normal way to be way to overwhelming... so many choices! Using pure tech sort of limits what you can make and you end up getting the most out of the game. Lets see here, some examples...

A Sunder is Inner Sphere. It weighs 90 tons and can have about 6 laser slots or 3 laser slots and 2 ballistics. (maybe not exactly but close) You can load it down with those Continuous Beam lasers and hang out with a steady stream of death emitting light at a nice 900m away. A Cyclops is also Inner Sphere.... it can have IFF which makes it hard to find, it can hold smoke bombs to further hide its location and long range weapons... Mini Gauss and Light Gauss ftw! Clan mechs you get the Wild Cat which holds a HUGE ballistic slot in its mouth (this mech looks awesome) and lasers AND jump jets... Anyway, I'm rambling.

Good to see ya again. hope to see you in the server sometime!

problem, very irritating problem...
i get installed and upated and when i go to the server menu, i am not updated!!!
i exit out of mercs, close out and restart mtx and it starts and hangs during the so called update that i supposedly had.
i uninstall mercs, reinstall, fire the game back up and the same exact thing happens again with my game not being up to date and will hang with the latest update again and again and again.
this mtx utility is a real piece of junk...

MTX is horrible for most people.. us too! I recommend using this:
http://wppc.conforums.com/index.cgi?board=31&action=display&num=1292907755
There is a ton of topics around on how to fix these insane issues... bah! Good news is once it is up to date it is much much easier to update in the future. Quote:

Nope, all of MTX and free mercs is all hand written code by people like you and me. They were nice enough to get the rights to the game and distribute it free of charge... only problem is that spyware/adaware/ and firewall programs mistake this hand written code as a VIRUS and promptly deletes it. Rest assured there is NO VIRUS ON ANY MEKTEK FILE. It is just over active spyware programs flagging it falsely. This happens EVERY TIME A NEW PATCH COMES OUT. BAH! Pain in the neck but it is normal... Tell your spyware program to chill out and label it as safe. Carry on!

Welcome back! I'll be glad to help ya out, just put up with me if I don't make much sense... lol

Lets get to it! you need a simple list of what you need to do and when to do it. Thats cool! NP. There are some things you should be made aware of first though - namely MTX is the best way to install this game and most antivirus software programs might flag mercs after or before as a virus. Rest assured that MTX has been tested and it is 100% safe for use as with everything it downloads. So just make sure you antivirus software knows that program is ok and don't let it delete it. That said. Install MTX ->

http://www.mektek.net/downloads/mtx/beta/SetupMTX1.0.3.5.exe

Oh hey I found a professional walkthru by bob ross. Awesome. Copy pasta time! At the time of this writing, v.1.0.3.5 is the current version of MTX - It may appear differently when you download

(if that didn't download for you click here and look for "MTX Client Download
The MTX Client ensures all software released by MekTek.net is up to date.
Latest Download (v.1.0.3.5)"
http://www.mektek.net/index.php/home/articles/mechwarrior4-mercenaries-downloads-r1204 )

Run the installer.
Due to conflicts with certain anti-virus suites (Most notably Norton and McAfee, it is recommended that you temporarily disable the AV during installation. After installation of MTX and MW4Mercs is complete, you will want to make an AV exceptions for the MW4Mercs.exe file and re-enable your AV. At the time of this writing, Mektek is reported to be working with AV Vendors to alleviate this issue.

Once the installation is complete, launch the MTX software. You won't see anything appear on the screen, but the MTX icon should appear in your System Tray (Bottom Right corner of the screen near the clock.)

Double-Click or Right Click > Restore on the MTX icon in the System Tray. It may take a moment for the application to display.

Once the window is open you might see a message stating "Our servers are under heavy load! Web page viewing in MTX is disabled" - This is normal behavior, Click on the "Games Available" tab at the top.

The "Games Available" tab is broken down into 3 sections: Installed Games, Games You Can Install, and Update Status.

Under the "Games You Can Install" section, Right-Click on "Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries" then Click "Install Game".

The download is rather large and can take a while. I'm using a 6MB cable connection and usually see times between 15-30 minutes when downloading the main game. If the "Download Speed" field shows a very low number after 2 or 3 minutes then refer to the following page for network troubleshooting: http://www.mektek.net/forums/user/4601-nano/page__tab__aboutme

Once the game is installed, you will have the basic full install of Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.

At the time of this writing, the current full install is 51.03.01.0030 - This number may change in the future

The final step in the installation process will be to update to the current release. To update Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries, again go to the "Games Available" tab in MTX. You will see "Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries" listed in the "Installed Games" section. Right-Click on "Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries" and Click "Check for Updates".

The updates should proceed in order one after the other. Watch the status field in the "Update Status" section to monitor the progress of the installation. There may be a brief pause between one update and the next.

If the updates do not automatically continue installing, then you will need to manually Right-Click on "Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries" then Click "Check for Updates" to install each individual update.

You can find the most recent version's version number by referring to the highest available patch number on the following page: MekTek Downloads -- The most recent version should be the topmost link under the section "Patches Download Via Torrent Client" and is often shown with a yellow "New" next to it. Since you are installing via MTX you don't need to download from this page, just use it as a reference.

Once the updates have finished, you can launch Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries by Right-Clicking on "Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries" on the "Games Available" tab in MTX and Clicking "Launch Game".

In some environments a UAC exception will need to be setup for MW4Mercs.exe and/or MW4Mercs.exe will need to be set to "Run as Administrator"

The following steps assume you want to play a multiplayer game. It also assumes that you are not using dial-up. You can use dial-up, but since I have never used it I won't go into detail on the setup process.

After the intro videos are finished, Click "Multiplayer" from the Main Menu.

You will need to setup your connection by Clicking the "New" button.
The Connection Wizard may launch automatically if there is no connection information already entered.

Select the "Yes, I am on a LAN or a dial-up connection." option and Click "Next".

Select your "Connection Type"

IMPORTANT:

You will want to select the speed closest to your actual connection speed, but not higher than your connection speed. If you have a 1000mb connection you will want to select the 768 option instead of the 1500. For more information Refer to this post-
http://www.mektek.net/forums/topic/166925-how-to-install-update-and-play-mw4mercs/page__p__1302902#entry1302902 .

Click "Next"

Select the "MekMatch" option and click "Next"

Give your connection a "Connection Name" then Click "Done"

You should now be on the main Multiplayer menu - Click the "MekMatch Servers" button on the right side.

You should have a list pull up containing the following server zones: Liao, Davion, Marik, Steiner, Kurita

Double-click one of the zones (Generally Kurita)

Locate a server that you wish to join and Double-click the server's name.
You may notice some color coded items:
BLUE - Indicates servers running the same version as you
RED - Indicates servers running older versions than you
GREEN - Indicates servers running newer versions than you
GRAY - I have no clue what gray means, and I've never tried to enter a gray server

You can only enter the BLUE servers.

Once you are in the server, Click on the top Drop-Down next to your name and Select your Mech's Chassis.

Next, Select the variant that you wish to use in the bottom drop-Down box.

If this is a team game, Select the Team you wish to join from the Team drop-down box.

When you are read to launch, Click the green "O" and it will change to a Check-mark.

If you've gone this far, then you are already playing Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries.

If you ran into trouble along the way or have basic game play questions, refer to the following links:

http://www.mektek.net/forums/index.php?showuser=4601

and varents:
http://m-v-a-n.appspot.com/

BUT lets take it one step at a time. Download MTX and install the game first. Then update it till it says 3.1.00.00.30

if MTX doesn't work for you then we will do something different... but for now, try this and this only.

thanks for the help, i deleted everything due to uninstalling it and reinstalling it and then finding out it was not taking out anything but adding on.
in other words, hard drive space was being used up en masse instead, so i had like 3 mercs packed in there and that made me mad so i took everything incuding mtx out.
i will try it again when i have the patience for i would still like to play the game again, but i just do not like going through several hours of hassle, messing around and frustration with a game that doesnt run while i could have been enjoying something else on the computer.
i will try it again some other time...
