I feel the need to explain something to you guys. Feel free to back me up, someone. I've had a lot of questions from the venge guys about "why the view change" I gotta tell you, I liked 3rd person better my self. CTF and Bacon made those views very useful! However in Mercs with Advanced Radar.. (line of sight radar) People on the other team can get behind a wall, use 3rd view and SEE OVER THE WALL despite the other players not showing up on radar. This let SNIPERS take charge of the field. We had 3rd view on for a few weeks and I noticed HUGE AMOUNTS OF SNIPERS that I never saw. People that were use to "cheating" with this view took full advantage of it. It left our old home Palace Gates a ghost town.. Players would stroll out to the palace and be killed from snipers and never even saw the shot. It was like being struck by lightning and you pissed Zeus off so bad he didn't even want you to know he threw the lightning at you. You never saw it, just dropped dead.

That being said, the day I changed the view to FFP... the sniping from hell stopped. You actually got to see the people jumping up because they were looking for you instead of already knowing where you were with that 3rd view. In short, I don't like it either but I'll keep it on as long as it makes the game more fair and more fun for all. And that is the bottom line, amirite?

This reminds me of times when SoE began to move from a pure Attrition/Battle unit to playing team games. Needless to say it was frustrating in the beginning, just the same way Jack described it. SoE server had 3rd view setting those times, and after switching to ffp things went much better for us again. Bottom line, if you don't want the camping + poptart stuff and all those 3rd view phantom snipers, ffp is the way to go.

Of course it's bad that you cannot see your mech in ffp, especially for CTF or STB. There should be a 3rd view option without the "cheat-like" possibilities of current 3rd view implementation. Just the ability to see your own mech, but no looking over hills/walls or around corners without being seen.

Looks like MekTek is trying to improve the balance between 3rd view and ffp at least a bit with the new .0029 LOS radar detection mode of advanced radar. Now with .0029 patch a 3rd view player behind terrain/obstacles will get detected by LOS advanced radar depending on the position of that floating virtual camera outside the mech, whereas on ffp its still the shape of the mech. Well, one step in the right direction...
