MechWarrior to be Distributed Free on BattleTech.com
In honor of BattleTech's 25th anniversary, Smith & Tinker has authorized MekTek.net and MekTek Studios to distribute MechWarrior 4 (along with its expansion packs) completely free. For years, MekTek.net has been the central point for online distribution of MechWarrior 4 expansion packs. Now they can provide the core game free to the fans as well. MekTek Studios, established in 2006, is a Canadian based software development studio out of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada specializing in 3D geospatial development and virtual environment replication. MekTek Studios is currently pioneering geospatial development projects for corporate and academic clients nationally as well as continuing to work on gaming related projects including the last expansion pack for Mechwarrior 4 (MP4), Assault Tech1: BattleTech (AT1:BT) and the development of the NP project – a cross-platform, shader ready .NET engine.

Wot wot? Free MW4 for all?
Is it possible?
I just skimmed over this... so...
What about the keys? If everyone gets the same copy... will this be a problem for online play? I hope it's not an issue!

This is OMG WOW! I cant believe all this is gonna be anyone's for the taking! There is only one person from Mercs I really miss the heck out of and his name is RODO.
Jack and I were gonna send him a Venge disk so he could play with all of us! NAO WE DONT HAVE TO!
ILL HAVE TO NOTIFY HIM IMMEDIATELY!!!

Bun, unfortunately you will still have to send Rodo a Veng CD:

We may be able to release a PR1 Mercs but there are some issues with that (i.e. - how to remove the copy protection). Vengeance we can't do (technically impossible for us - also we have no way to support a zonematch server for it)."

Bottom line is - MekTek will release a dvd image of mercs mp3.1 with complete mercs install, nothing else.

Ahh crud.. Awww well. Whats that old saying? "If it sounds too good to be true...."
Awesome that no one will have to fiddle with the mercs files anymore though! So thats good news for some folks at least! Thanks guys! I'll still put a button up on the site for it when it comes out.
