Introducing the WPPC Puretech server

QUESTION: Why a PureTech server? Jack, you lost your mind?
There are 126 Mechs to choose from and 114 weapons. The combinations are insane and can easily overwhelm a new player. I've played on a few Puretech servers and I have to say, these servers are fantastic! Puretech will allow players to use just about all the mechs and weapons. Otherwise some chassis and weapons are obsolete and wont even get used! With puretech it limits what weapons you can use WITH what chassis you have. It evens it out and I can tell, this is the way Mercs was ment to be played! In my opinion, of course.

QUESTION: What is puretech?
Puretech follows the Battletech lore and books to a T. If your driving a chassis that was made by the Inner Sphere you can only use weapons that was made by the Inner Sphere! If your using a mech that was made by Clans then you can only use Clan Weaponry! This allows players to use the mechs the way they were intended. Instance - MadCat mk2 VS Highlander. Why use one or the other? Madcat mk2 is Clan and Highlander is Inner Sphere - That means with the weapons the highlander can use is large lasers with a range of 600m or CONTINUOUS LASERS with a range of 900m! The Madcat can use ER Large lasers with 800 range or HEAVY Large lasers with shorter range but more damage. This makes a give and take relationship with mechs and weapons that was very much a part of the games development!

QUESTION: Why HLA?
Easy, 2 words. Rocket Launcher. Or three words . continuous beam lasers. many of the weapons in mercs were designed to be used in HEAT with limited ammo. HLA acts as a limiter to how often a player can abuse fire a weapon. Those continuous beam lasers can be a real pain while rocket launchers will send you into a never ending spree of stumbles while the other player never has to reload or flush coolant. Again, the game is ment to be played in HLA to prevent over usage of certain pulse weapons, continued fire weapons and heat missiles. It is good, ok? In my opinion, of course.

QUESTION: Whats up with going to mercs?
There will never be a game to replace Vengeance, period. However as the months tick by, many players fall out of playing venge... leaving us having smaller crowds month after month. (I know tournaments are a big hit and those random server filling sessions are fantastic but they don't happen nearly as much as they use too.) So mercs can tide us over a bit sometimes! We get a good base built up there, we can play CTF and makeshift dodgeball in mercs... once we have a large enough base built up there, we can always ask around in Mercs if anyone has old Vengeance laying around. I'm sure many of those guys have the game laying around and just think that no one plays it anymore. Good way to advertise our venge server!

QUESTION: Why forced first person perspective? I love my floating camera behind my head in 3rd person! Easy, because that floating camera behind your head... lets you see over walls.... with the new radar system "Advanced Radar" you will only see enemies in your field of vision. Its like line of sight radar.. if you can turn your head and see the mech on the field.. it will show up on your radar... if an enemy is behind a wall.. you wont see them.. but in 3rd person.. you CAN see them.. it basically would let SNIPERS become SNIPERS FROM HELL and people would be struck down instantly and never see where the shot came from. Its a pain in the neck. TL;DR - Snipers with long range and 3rd person would have an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE to players that were not.

QUESTION: What maps will be served?That will be decided as we get to play there more and more. There is like a million maps there, we gotta see what is good out there. CTF and Missions are fantastic though and always some Team Battles!

QUESTION: None of the classic evil bot commands work? Why? I hadn't put them in yet... we will have them! *edit* most back now!


QUESTION: What are the rules of the server "The Dining Room"? Remember that good ol' server back in Vengeance 3.0? Yep, same rules for the most part. Don't be a jerk to play with.. people play the game to have a good time... don't curse at people and ruin their fun. Like eating out to dinner at a nice restaurant and not get shouted at and food thrown at you? Sure! Everyone does.. don't be the guy throwing insults at the staff or other players... Aside from that... yah, thats pretty much it! LEGGING IS NOW ALLOWED So Armor those puppies up. Many of the mechs have HUGE legs and that is the only weak point sometimes...
Just have fun! Alright?..















BUT I have some problems.

The server works and everyone can get in.... but the host Bun Li can't get in unless the game is window'd. We don't know why... If she types in lobby with it full screened nothing shows up... the moment the game is window'd it all works fine! Thoughts?

I would tell ya something if I had any ideas...I am stumped!

I have to assume y'all have reduced her resolution to something like 800x600 to see if that fixed the issue...yes?

CHECKED every resolution in the list.... nothing... and it only happens on our server! works fine in other servers!

These ports correct on Buns Machine?

Forward these ports/port ranges to your server's static LAN IP:
2302-2311
27999
28800-28808
47624
9999
=> protocol type both TCP/UDP for all these ports (I know it's a simplification, but this usually works best)

+ DX-Port running on server PC with same port range:
2302-2311

I was wondering about some map locations. Anyone know where I can download the CTF, KOTH maps? And do they have STB? I've seen a few servers out there with these map types and I'm dying to have them in ours! Heh!

OOoooo k... After a quick test tonight we found that only 3 people could get in..... no one else.. 2 others kept getting bounced...

Here is mine..I have had no issues running dedi and playing..and all folks can join..

Looks like I have a few other ports open under "mercserver" than you do...maybe this helps?

Yard's ports are almost the same that always worked fine for me:

Forward these ports/port ranges:
2302-2311
27999
28800-28808
47624
9999

Another thing, actually there are 5 ppl on WPPC Mercs MP3.1 server, but still 6 bots!! I really like the new server concept, but also hate playing against bots. Its annoying and kills any attempt to develop some reasonable team play, There's a dedicated server setting to make bots disappear above a certain player count. For example, no bots with at least 4 ppl on server, that's what I would recommend.
I got no problem with the puretech thing, but I would prefer to play on servers without tons of bots.

Just my two cents...

I have already heard the complaints...Jack...maybe no more than 2-3?

Need to edit my first post again. They are those auto bots. There is 6 of them (I will scale it back to 4) but they go away automaticly on the next map when more than 4 people are in the server. smiley Thats what the script said, anyway.. lol. I'll try these ports tonight after Venge... Boy I hope those work... I was really bummed out today thinking our server wont work.
